“Already we have seen Satan in his role of agent provocateur (1 Chron. 21: 1; Job 1— 2; Matt. 4: 1-11 par.). A curious feature of such agents all through history is the way they tend to overstep their mandate. Recall in this connection the activities of the FBI in instigating murders that it ostensibly existed to prevent. Viola Liuzzo was gunned down during the civil rights struggle by an undercover FBI informer, and anti-Vietnam war groups were infiltrated and incited to violence by FBI operatives. The FBI even deceived a succession of U.S. Presidents by withholding data on the John F. Kennedy assassination and setting illegal wiretaps in an attempt to blackmail Martin Luther King, Jr. The FBI director, J. Edgar Hoover, also appears to have acted against his own chief executives by keeping blackmail files on presidents in order to prevent them from firing or retiring him. Add to this revelations about the clandestine activities of the CIA, and we find ourselves possessed of a secret and virtually autonomous government within the government which threatens the very basis of our democratic system.
“The comparison is particularly apt, for Satan also seems to have evolved from a trustworthy intelligence-gatherer into a virtually autonomous and invisible suzerain within a world ruled by God.”
